Without the electrode pads, TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) machine alone cannot do its job. These electrodes are considered to be the continuing cost for using a TENS unit. It is highly recommended that you purchase electrodes using insurance, so the company will purchase the replacement pads for you at their own expense. Nonetheless, if you don’t have any insurance, there are some tips on how you can prolong the lifespan of your TENS unit replacement pads.
Proper Removal
There are many factors that may lead to the early demise of your TENS unit electrode pads. The lack of knowledge on how to handle them properly could be one. Some people will just carelessly tug the electrodes on the wire which may, more often than not, damage the electrodes. The proper way of removing the electrodes is through slightly bending them on the corners. DONECO® electrodes are pre-gelled and it’s suggested that you rub across the electrode in an upward fashion to help loosen the gel. You may grasp the electrode on the edge and peel from its liner once the gel is loosened.
Electrode Rotation
Some electrodes may not last that long especially when used for longer periods in a warm, humid environment due to oversaturation. By rotating them every 4 to 6 hours, you help extend the life of the electrodes. You can tell if the electrodes are already oversaturated when they don’t stick well anymore. Then, you would have to rehydrate or replace them.
Electrode Rehydration
On the other hand, if the electrodes don’t stick well due to lack of moisture, you may add a drop of water on the gel surface. Rub and spread the water using your index finger until it has mixed with the gel. Try sticking them and continue rehydrating the electrodes until the desired adhesion property is achieved.
Proper Storage
The electrodes must be air dried right after using to remove the extra moisture. They must also be placed back in their plastic liners and stored in a cool, dry place.
Keep in mind that buying replacements for your TENS units electrodes is an additional cost. Better yet, follow the aforementioned tips to save money and time.
